What's New in AstroGuide 1.4.1

New planning tools, workflow improvements, and fixes in the latest AstroGuide releases.

AstroGuide 1.4.1 is a focused follow-up to the Solar System release. The emphasis this time is planning depth, catalog/media improvements, and performance polish.

The headline addition is Gear Advisor: a new schedule-review tool that helps connect a night’s plan to the gear, filters, framing, site context, and conditions you actually intend to use.

This release also adds progress-aware Catalog Collections, richer comet data, more target imagery from my own gallery, better Found Location forecasts, and a set of search, browse, metadata, widget, and launch/background reliability improvements.


Gear Advisor

Gear Advisor is a new way to review how well your current schedule fits your selected gear and observing context.

Instead of only asking whether a target is visible, Gear Advisor looks at the plan as a whole. It evaluates how well the selected subjects match your filters, field of view, gear, site obstructions, timing, exposure context, and the conditions for the selected night.

The goal is practical: help you spot weak parts of a plan before you spend the night collecting data. It can point out filter fit, framing concerns, mount or timing context, site-obstruction risks, exposure guidance, and better-night opportunities.

Catalog Collections

Browse now has a separate area for Collections.

Collections are different from catalogs: they are meant to be completed. Messier, Caldwell, Herschel 400, and RASC Finest NGC targets now have collection-aware browse surfaces so you can track progress as you log sessions and see how close you are to finishing each list.

Progress is tied to your observed-session history and catalog aliases, so AstroGuide can recognize captures even when an object is known by more than one name or catalog identifier.

Comet Detail Improvements

Comet Mode now includes much more detailed comet metadata.

This release expands comet brightness context, history, and sudden-change detection where metadata is available. The goal is to make Comet Mode less like a static list and more like a planning surface for objects that are moving, changing, and not always easy to reason about from a simple catalog row.

Comet detail views also have richer fallback behavior, so the app can keep presenting useful comet information even when some dynamic metadata is not available.

New Target Images

Many subjects in the catalog now have new images from my own gallery.

Target Detail can use hosted target image metadata for richer hero imagery, while bundled thumbnails remain available as offline and list-view fallbacks. The result should be a more visual catalog without making core browse/search workflows heavier than they need to be.

This release also expands catalog media coverage behind the scenes, adding approved target thumbnail assignments and capture-derived assets.

Found Location Forecasts

Found Location details now include hourly forecast context.

When you search for or compare another observing location, AstroGuide can show hourly conditions for the selected forecast day. Distance estimates and directions have also been tightened so travel actions appear when they are useful for the selected site.

This should make location scouting more concrete: not just “is this site darker?”, but “what does this night look like there?”

Performance and Reliability

AstroGuide 1.4.1 also includes several improvements aimed at everyday responsiveness and stability:

  • Search and Browse are faster and more stable
  • Initial search/browse rows can appear sooner, with heavier detail work deferred
  • Image and thumbnail loading apply less memory pressure
  • Widget snapshot publishing is more bounded
  • Launch and background behavior are more resilient
  • Dynamic metadata compatibility is more tolerant of future package families and cache formats

These are not the loudest changes in the release, but they matter. A lot of AstroGuide’s value depends on moving quickly through targets, plans, sites, and context without making the app feel heavy.

Why This Release Matters

Version 1.4.0 expanded AstroGuide outward into the Solar System. Version 1.4.1 turns back toward the everyday planning loop: choose a plan, understand the gear fit, track what you have captured, browse targets faster, inspect richer catalog imagery, and compare locations with better forecast context.

For newer imagers, the goal is to make the planning questions more explicit. For experienced imagers, the goal is to expose more of the factors that usually live in your head: gear, filters, framing, timing, site, history, and conditions.

AstroGuide is still built around the same basic question: what kind of night do you actually have? This release adds more ways to answer that before the telescope is already running.
